The weather on this morning wasn't promising but John and Joan in their non-Triumph and Glenn in his Spitfire set off from Ilfracombe to Smeatharpe to check out the new event. Marshal contacted us to cancel because in Langport, only 30 minutes away from the airfield, it was cold and wet! When we arrived the weather cleared and many cars turned up. There was only one aircraft (an army spotter 'plane), no Dakotas and only a small group of military vehicles: a few re-enactors but generally dissappointing. Glenn returned to North Devon but we stayed at Marshal's overnight and returned for a second day to Smeatharpe with the Vitesse in the lead! The weather locally was good but Glenn did not return due to bad weather in North Devon. Twice the cars attended on the Sunday, approx 200 I'd say. So, a good day for cars and a few more aircraft made it worth being there. We were asked to parade past a PA point and then circle using the long runways, which was fast and exciting. At about 1600hrs a large dark cloud formation showed up and although Marshall left he got caught with his hood down befor he got home! Oh dear! We had a dry return and were glad we went. It may be revised next year. |
