We started the run to the West Somerset Steam Rally in the usual way. John & Joan in the 948, and Peter in the '47 Roadster went from Ilfracombe to meet up with Sharon in her Spitfire, and then joined by Steve in his, at our lay-by. We used the Link Road to intercept the B3227 ( old A361) outside South Molton. The road was almost empty, so we had a good run via Bamptom and Wiveliscombe to Norton Fitzwarren. It was the West Somerset Railway's own site where they are creating a massive new rail intersection to turn their whole trains not just the engine! The site was wet but did not get worse, in fact actually started to dry out with the sunshine. There was plenty to do and see. We all met some old friends (Heather and Marshall and Dave's cousin Rhys amongst others) and it was good to see the Somerset Area too. We went by a free bus service to the Bishops Lydeard Station with Steam fanatic friends to see the newly renewed 'Braunton'. This is a West Country Class Locomotive which ran from London to Ilfracombe in the '60s. It was a great sight. The day went so quickly. The run back was thankfully uneventful. We called off at the Jubilee Inn for a final noggin 'n' natter. Steve and Sharon peeled off at Barnstaple and we made home but, in the rain. Another great venue for consideration next year. |
