Father Day at Castle Drogo 2011

Sunday 19th June was Father's Day when two cars from North Devon went to Castle Drogo on the edge of Dartmoor. Glenn & Trish were in his now proven Herald Estate and John, Joan and young 'Shan' in their Vitesse. Both the weather and the open roads meant a swift enjoyable run down arriving at 0930hrs. We were parked on the courtyard right outside the front door amongst the first dozen cars. In all there were about 70 cars by lunchtime with the Triumph marque was well represented with all the types on show. Peter & Barbara from Somerset TSSC were there in their moss green Herald Saloon and two cars from Devon TSSC (south). The castle tour was well worth the visit and the site marshalls were very interested in all the cars.

We had our meal outside as the views of Dartmoor were stunning. We did several rounds of the cars. There was a 3ltr Studabaker President, under restoration but was in fair condition. It had belonged to an Indian Maharaja in the '50s. Also notable was a black 3ltr Maxi type limosine with twin headlights: it was iimmaculate, truly concourse. With the weather still good we had, thankfully, an uneventful equally great trip home. We stopped at Muddiford Inn for a drink as we didn't want the day to end.

Bude Motor Show 2011

We decided to support the Bude Show on Sunday 5th June after our visit to South Molton the previous day. Just two cars made the run - Glenn & Trish still testing his 1500 Estate and John & Joan in their Vitesse. The run down the A39 'Atlantic Highway' was most enjoyable. As the Vitesse entered the showground the nearside rear tyre went bang and nearly came off the wheel. As we set about changing the wheel (not easy on wet turf) someone handed over the complete valve which had shot past him as the tyre popped. We considered ourselves so fortunate because just before that we had been doing 60mph and such a blowout could have been disastrous! The show was very good with over 175 cars attending. There were prizes for entries but mainly from the Bude Motor Club. It is a good venue being central to the town and the canal. Cars not seen befor was an unrestored 1800 BMC Maxi Utility pickup assembled in Australia and imported back recently. Another was an early VWCamper covered all over in underseal to stop any further rust! Another good day but we were glad to get home without any further problems. When the tyre was inspected by the garage they discovered that the wheel was fitted with an innertube and that the valve base had been cut all around where it had exited the hole in the wheel. The innertube was of unknown age so it does make one think about using say 10 year or older tyres/innertubes.
South Molton Vintage Rally 2011

Our gang comprised of Glenn & Trish in his re-engined Herald 1500 Estate, John & Joan in their Vitesse 2 ltr with Shannon their grandnephew (a budding petrolhead hereafter called 'Shan' for street cred), Ray & Wendy were in their Spitfire 1500 and Peter Clarke had his Riley with 'Scooby' his new rescue dog. An old friend of Glenn's named Barry was there in a nice red '67 Mk3 Spitfire. We hope to see him again. The weather was fine but quite windy so that sheltering from the wind was great for bonding in Glenn's small but faithful tent! We did our turn around the ring and the show was good as usual. After the Show we went to Ray & Wendy's place for a great BBQ where we were joined by Steve & Sharon and stayed late in good company. We all had a totally enjoyable day.

March meeting at the Tarka Inn, North Devon

Troops a bit thin on the ground, illness and shifts having intervened. Steve Thomas, Steve Knight, Ray, Wendy and me. Steve K. showed us a book written by him featuring the Rolls-Royce Twenty which was used in the 1950s as a breakdown truck by Tilley and Bowers’ Garage of Ilfracombe, where Gerald Webber (Steve W's Uncle and Kay's brother) was apprenticed for a time. Later Mr.Knight (senior) used it to carry a generator to show films to the benighted villages of north and mid-Devon!

February meeting at the Tarka Inn, North Devon

We met at the Tarka Inn with Joan, Glenn & Trish, Steve K, Dave & Kay, Sharon, Edith and Steve in attendence. No Triumphs were in evidence but we did plan the shows we were going to attend this year.
January meeting at the Tarka Inn, North Devon

We met at the Tarka Inn this month as we shall again in February due to Steve T leaving for Australia that day. Sharon, Steve, Edith, Ray, Wendy, Dave and Kay have a good catch up and were really suprised when Steve T popped in on his way back from buying fuel for the trip to the airport! No Triumphs in attendence but with all the salt on the roads, it was definitely the sensible option.
